90 Years of Baking

90 Years of Baking - Christies Bakery

In 1932, two brothers opened a small bakery in a small town.

Nearly 30 years later,

They sold the bakery

To an Italian immigrant and the daughter of a farmer.

Though the keys exchanged hands, the same family values stayed.

The name remained

And over time,

Became intertwined in the city’s history.

Husband and wife became mother and father,

And their family grew alongside the Paris of the Prairies.

They made cakes,

Donuts,

Cinnamon buns,

And of course

Bread!

Weddings weren’t complete without a cake by Janet,

And it wasn’t a Saturday stroll if you didn’t stop by 420 33rd Street.

When a new century dawned

It was time for the kiddos to take over.

Taking what they learned from their parents

And new skills of their own,

They carried the torch

And continued the tradition

Of providing world class baking

In the heart of the prairies.

They crossed the river,

Bringing Saskatoon another gift from Italy.

The new location seemed to send out a signal,

And a family scattered across the globe

Came back together.

Siblings,

Cousins,

Nieces,

Nephews,

Grandchildren,

All worked hand in hand,

Like they did in ‘32

In ‘66

And now,

2022.

So much has happened in 90 years,

And yet,

We’ve still tried to do just one thing

Bring positivity to the prairies

Through the one thing we do best:

Baking.

Here’s to 90 years Saskatoon

And here’s to 90 more.
